Redefining Security

Growing up with a parent who struggled with severe depression forced me to grow up far earlier than any 7-year-old girl should ever have to. While other kids relied on their parents for stability, I learned to depend on myself. 

My father’s illness often left him sleeping for long stretches of time and emotionally absent, which meant that from 7 years old,d I had to manage my own responsibilities, emotions, and future without consistent support. The hardest part was not just the absence but rather the unpredictability. There were moments when I needed guidance or reassurance, yet I found silence instead. Over time, I learned to stop expecting help and to prepare for disappointment. I became highly independent, not by choice but by necessity. I learned to handle my emotions, solve problems, and stay focused even when my surroundings felt unstable.

One of the most painful challenges I faced was realizing that the financial security I was promised for my schooling did not exist. The money my father had set aside for college was taken, misused, and never repaid. Leaving me to confront the reality that my future depended entirely on my own effort. That betrayal was devastating, but it also became a turning point. I learned that I could not rely on promises, only my own discipline, planning, and resilience. Instead of giving up, I doubled down on my academics and committed myself to creating opportunities that could not be taken away. Living in this environment also taught me difficult emotional lessons. I learned how manipulation and self-centered behavior can coexist with mental illness, and how important boundaries are for survival. I cared deeply about my father, but I had to accept that I could not fix him. That realization was painful, but it gave me clarity and emotional strength. I learned empathy without sacrificing my own well-being. To meet these challenges in daily life, I leaned on structure and routine. School became my safe place, a space where effort led to results, and consistency mattered. I sought support from teachers and counselors, and learned the importance of asking for help. To other students in similar situations, this: your circumstances are not your fault, and they do not define your future. Protect your goals, seek support, and trust that independence can become a source of strength.

These experiences shaped not only who I am, but what I chose to pursue. Growing up without security taught me the value of prevention, protection, and accountability. That perspective directly influenced my decision to pursue cybersecurity, a field focused on safeguarding people from unseen threats. I want a career where I can protect others from loss and vulnerability, as I once experienced them. What draws me to cybersecurity is that the work happens behind the scenes. When it is done right, nobody notices. And that’s the whole point. I’m intrigued by the idea that my work could quietly prevent harm, protect privacy, and help people feel safe in a digital world they rely on every day. I’m pursuing my passion by challenging myself academically and preparing to major in cybersecurity at Oregon State University, where I’m hoping to gain both technical skills and real-world experience. I also take the time to learn more about the field through online research and communities. Digital threats pop up every day because the field is rapidly evolving, and curiosity is key to staying ahead of the curve. The impact I hope to make is meaningful yet straightforward: I want to protect people. Cyberattacks don’t just affect companies but also individuals, families, and communities. My goal is to work in cybersecurity in a way that prioritizes prevention and education, helping to reduce risks before they cause real damage. I plan to build that impact through my teaching, internships, and sharing what I learn so others can better protect themselves online. Growing up too fast was never something I wanted, but it gave me resilience, determination, and purpose. I carry those qualities with me as I work toward a future built on stability, integrity, and self-earned success.
